RESIDUAL IDENTITY

RESIDUAL IDENTITY

As it is known, the problem of identity in the contemporary world, as well as in the contemporary art is dramatic. The old models of self-identification, which are bequeathed by the Enlightenment and the Modern Age, are in ruins. Identity is no longer based on obviousness and myths, because the world of today is more than ever relative and undermined with self-generating conflicts. Even though in theory the whirlwinds of globalization presuppose the origination of countless new constructed identities, there remains the question: In relation to what values should they be arranged? And likewise: What is ‘value’ and ‘achievement’ today?
Within the boundaries of the art of painting the answer to this question is particularly vague, since during the last few decades painting has transformed from a major pictorial genre into so to speak a conceptual supplement subordinate to the question: What is ‘contemporary art’? What is more, the question now is: And can there be a cont…

MODIFYING PAINTING FROM POST-COMMUNIST EUROPE

GORDON CARTER AND BOGDAN ALEKSANDROV – MODIFYING PAINTING FROM POST-COMMUNIST EUROPE

Rouen Rouenov

By descent and definition every artist of today is an idiot. Whether he is talented, educated or willing to stand his ground, he is a product of the mass society and his prospects are only in the direction of modifying his idiocy and neurasthenia. I am speaking of rearranging individual gifts in accordance and together with the cultural context. The latter is a feast of the mass culture, advertising and global media soup. Some call this a process of defining new cultural identities in the globally expanded context. In all cases, however, there remain the questions of values and criteria, which in the post-modern era are not universal any more but refer to only limited topos and thus the change in the nature of art. The mass image and its consumption depreciated the cultural diversity and to a considerable extent liquidated the universality of artistic heuristics, and thus all ar…

Mixed

A diverse exhibition featuring mixed techniques, giving visual substance to the interplay between the shared public experiences and the personal interpretations of these realities. The diversity of technique includes contemporary painting in large format and in a series of 10 small works which unify into one rythmatic piece; a storyboard for video art in 15 units, realized in acrylic, pencil and marker on paper mounted on frames; a digital photograph mounted on plastic panel; and 3 works of video art.The public spaces are governed by social convention and the enshrinement of these conventions in law; such conventions and legislations are based on the concept of a generalized common man, however there also exists an individual man who is constantly forced to operate in this social minefield. Such a man may be found in such diverse forms as a terminally ill patient, dying in transit to the hospital, experiencing a moment that no man can truly appreciate, a moment that places the common…
TOWN SYMBOL AT THE ENTRANCE OF SAMOKOV

Explanation of the proposal:
A monumental sculptural composition, conceived and to be achieved with a typical and categorical constructivist approach through the organization of the direct interactionbetween three primordial materials. Metal, stone and lighthave each played a decisive role in the history ofmankind’s development. Over time, positive and desirable symbolic meanings have become part of the description of their content and quality. Anthropologists have named several epochs of our history after the first two of these materials; while those who look toward the future propose that the next great epoch will be named after light as this “material” will continue to be integrated into our culture as a medium for the transference of information. The three materials have several possible and simultaneous symbolic meanings: stone representing the natural world in which man lives, steel suggests the ingenuity of man in extracting from and then tran…

8 seconds of my life. An Exhibition in 4 dimensions
Argumentation
Science uncovers the theories which provide rational explanations for the physical world’s structure. From the start of the 20th century up until the present day we have been the witnesses to the amazing and unexpected developments of new theories and technologies: Quantum Theory, the General Theory of Relativity, String theory and the conceptualization of space-time as a more accurate perception of reality. Our expanding knowledge has achieved unexpected results, the ramifications of which reverberate far beyond the field of Physics. The accelerated development of science has led to the emergence of new border forms and to hypotheses, which common linear thinking finds hard to comprehend. The intuitive path of knowledge of the world and human self-awareness develops in parallel. In contemporary art concepts like hypotheses, explorations, paradigms, evidence or projects sound natural in the expression of phenomena from th…
